Wreath Sale Benefits Those Experiencing Homelessness

Community CARES, a nonprofit emergency homeless shelter and resource center, understands all too well how difficult the holidays can be for those who are struggling to make ends meet or to find shelter. Hence, they have set out to help those less fortunate by selling live evergreen wreaths. The wreaths, complete with a bow and a “HOPE” or a unique house ornament, can be purchased for $50. Want to throw in a little kindness? For an additional $25 donation, CARES will deliver the wreath to a friend, family member or co-worker within a twenty-mile radius. A card will be included indicating that the wreath was purchased in the individual’s honor. The proceeds from the sale will go towards providing resources and emergency shelter to those at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

To order a wreath, contact Emily at egochenaur@morethanshelter.org or visit www.morethanshelter.org. These wreaths, as well as many other unique and fun wreaths, may be purchased or ordered on November 30 from 9am to 4pm at the Holiday Craft and Fine Arts Show at the Carlisle Expo Center. Orders will continue through December 4, 2019 with delivery guaranteed by December 9, 2019.

CARES decided on the evergreen wreath because of its symbolism. The circular shape represents no beginning and no end and the evergreen symbolizes growth.  Beth Kempf, CARES’ Executive Director, stated, “We want CARES residents and the community to understand that there is no beginning or end to positive growth in a person. Individuals can continually improve their circumstances regardless of what they have experienced in the past.”

Emily Gochenaur, CARES’ Community Development Coordinator, added, “The holidays are stressful and often depressing for those who are vulnerable to housing insecurity. Brightly lit trees with an abundance of presents underneath and large home-cooked meals around the table with laughter and joy often do not exist in their lives. Many families spend the holidays on a cot on the floor of a shelter thinking about how they can possibly find a way to make ends meet or how to get out of their difficult circumstances.” By purchasing a wreath, you are providing hope and positively impacting the lives of families, not just for the holidays, but for the entire year.
