Back-to-school shopping season is here.
Which means somewhere right now, a parent is standing in the middle of a store holding a three-ring binder, twelve packs of pencils and a very specific kind of folder that apparently does not exist anywhere on Earth.
And the list just keeps growing.
But you can get through back-to-school shopping without losing your patience, your paycheck, or your mind.
Here are five hacks to make it a little easier.
Hack #1: Check What You Already Have
Before you go shopping, empty the backpacks, check the junk drawers and look through last year's supplies.
You might already have:
- scissors
- pencils
- notebooks
- glue
- folders
There's no reason to buy another 48-pack of crayons if you already have 47 crayons sitting in a drawer.
Hack #2: Make a List... and Actually Use It
This sounds obvious, but there's a reason stores put all the fun stuff right next to the school supplies.
Your kid needs three notebooks.
Suddenly they're holding a $35 water bottle, a giant squishmallow and a pencil case shaped like a taco.
Stick to the list.
Your bank account will appreciate the discipline.
Hack #3: Don't Buy Everything in One Trip
Unless your child starts school tomorrow, you probably don't need to.
Buy the essentials first.
Then check what you can find online, what you already have, and what's likely to go on sale.
Spreading it out can save money and makes the whole process less overwhelming.
Hack #4: Give Kids a Budget
If your kids are old enough, give them a number.
"This is what we have to spend."
Now they have to make choices.
Want the fancy notebook? Fine. But maybe that means skipping the $20 water bottle.
It's a surprisingly good way to teach budgeting without turning it into a lecture.
Hack #5: Do the Final Check Before You Leave
Before you get home and discover you bought everything except the one thing your child actually needs, check the list one more time.
Pens?
Folders?
Calculator?
Gym clothes?
That weirdly specific teacher-requested item?
Check it off.
Because going back to the store after you've already survived back-to-school shopping should qualify as community service.
Back-to-school shopping doesn't have to be perfect.
Make a list. Check what you already own. Set a budget. And don't let a display of glittery notebooks destroy your financial plan.
You'll get through it.
And in a few weeks, those kids will be back in school...
...and you'll finally be able to hear yourself think.
