Las Vegas Man Fined $1,174 For Tossing Cigarette On The Ground

A North Las Vegas man received a hefty fine after police officers saw him flick a cigarette onto the ground. The man, who was identified only by his first name, Eric, had just left the Cannery Hotel and Casino and tossed his cigarette onto the side of the road when he was approached by police officers.

Eric told 13 Actions News that the officers patted him down for weapons and then handed him a ticket for littering. When Eric got home, he went online to see how much the fine was going to be. He was shocked when he learned that he owed $1,174 for tossing away his cigarette.

"I think it's blatantly out of proportion to the crime," said Eric.

He considered fighting the ticket, but couldn't afford to take time off of work, so he decided to pay the hefty fine.

"I couldn't risk my career, working two jobs, I really don't have time for community service," he told the news station.

The North Las Vegas Police Department defended the fine, saying that it "helps the community stay clean and to improve the quality of life for our residents."

The large fine appears to have worked as a deterrent for Eric, who says that he's "scared to death to ever do it again."
