Pigeon Held On Espionage Charges In India

A pigeon was released by police in India after being detained on suspicion of being a Chinese spy.

No, really. The pigeon was held in Mumbai after it was found with two rings on its legs bearing Chinese script. One of the rings contained a microchip, so Detectives held the pigeon at the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals on suspicion of espionage on behalf of China. The pigeon was turned over to the Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and eventually set free months later.

The police determined the pigeon was not a Chinese spy, but instead part of open-water racing in Taiwan and flew off course, and ended up in India. PETA India, actually lead a campaign for the bird's release.

"PETA India handles 1,000 calls a week of animal emergencies, but this was our first case of a suspected spy who needed to be freed," Meet Ashar, head of the group's cruelty response division, said.

The pigeon's current whereabouts are unknown.
