The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has issued a warning about a phone scam that uses its phone number to deceive residents. The PUC reported on Thursday (March 27) that scammers are manipulating caller ID systems to make it seem as if calls are coming from the commission's Philadelphia office. These fraudulent callers claim that the recipient's energy supplier is being switched and demand a cancellation fee to stop the change.
The PUC emphasizes that it does not make unsolicited calls to demand payments, confirm supplier changes, or threaten to terminate service. The commission urges Pennsylvanians to be cautious and not to provide personal information or payment over the phone to unknown callers.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious calls to the PUC and to verify any claims directly with their energy supplier. The PUC's alert comes as part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers from scams that exploit official phone numbers.
