National Prescription Drug Take Back Day This Saturday

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This biannual event, organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), provides a safe and anonymous way to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. The initiative aims to prevent drug misuse and protect the environment by offering designated collection sites across the United States.

Unused medications can pose serious risks, including accidental poisoning and addiction. According to the DEA, many people who misuse prescription drugs obtain them from friends or family members. By participating in Take Back Day, communities can reduce these risks and contribute to healthier environments.

Superior HealthPlan is supporting the event by encouraging providers to educate members about drug misuse and inform them of local drop-off locations. For those unable to participate on April 25, year-round disposal options are available. Individuals can find nearby disposal sites using the DEA's Year-Round Drop Off Location Search webpage.

Northwestern Medicine is also participating by hosting collection sites and providing naloxone training and distribution. However, sharps and liquids will not be accepted. For more information on proper disposal and to find a collection site near you, visit the official DEA website.
