NB I-83 ramp to SB I-81 will be closed the night of Wednesday, March 26

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the ramp from northbound Interstate 83 to southbound Interstate 81 at Exit 51A is scheduled to be closed next Wednesday night for the installation of overhead sign trusses on I-81 in the Harrisburg area.

Weather permitting, the ramp will be closed from 10:00 PM Wednesday, March 26, to 5:00 AM Thursday, March 27. Northbound I-83 traffic will be detoured via Exit 51B to northbound I-81 to Ext 72B (Linglestown), then return south on I-81.

There will be rolling stops of up to 15 minutes between midnight and 5:00 AM for the remainder of the week as well as the following week through Friday, April 4, on southbound I-81 between Exit 69 (Progress Avenue) and Exit 67 (Route 22/322), and on northbound I-81 between Exit 65 (Route 11/15) and Exit 67 (Route 22/322).

During these dates, there also will be nightly lane restrictions within those limits from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Beginning Monday, April 7, there will be lane restrictions only from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM within the same work limits. These restrictions will be in place for the remainder of the week but may extend longer depending on the weather.

Motorists should be alert and watch for stopped or slow-moving traffic.

This work is part of a project that includes bridge preservation work, approach pavement work, sign and sign structure replacements, and other miscellaneous construction on I-81 from Progress Avenue in the City of Harrisburg to the Susquehanna River at the George N. Wade Bridge in Susquehanna Township, and on Route 22 from Elmerton Avenue to about 0.5 miles north of I-81 in the city.

Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones for their safety as well as for the safety of the road crews.
