Governor Josh Shapiro has released a statement following a shooting incident in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, where two state troopers were shot. The incident occurred on Wednesday night (October 8) as officers responded to a call about a retail theft at Dick's Sporting Goods in Guilford Township.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the suspects fled the scene towards Interstate 81. Troopers pursued the vehicle and successfully stopped it using spike strips at I-81 southbound at exit 3 in Antrim Township. Two female suspects complied with the officers and were taken into custody. However, a male suspect opened fire, injuring two troopers. The officers returned fire, fatally wounding the male suspect.
Both injured troopers were flown to a nearby hospital, where they are reported to be in critical and serious condition. Governor Shapiro expressed his support for the officers on social media, stating, "Pennsylvania's law enforcement officers are the very best of us — running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe." He also asked for prayers for the troopers and their families.
The Pennsylvania State Police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, although the scene remains active.
