Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers are in critical and serious condition following a shooting incident on Interstate 81 in Franklin County. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening (October 8) after troopers responded to a report of retail theft at a Dicks Sporting Goods on Lincoln Highway East.
Upon locating the suspects' vehicle, a police pursuit ensued. The chase concluded at I-81 southbound Exit 3, where officials deployed spike strips to halt the vehicle. While two female suspects complied with law enforcement, a male suspect opened fire, injuring two troopers. The troopers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.
The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at Wellspan York Hospital. The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association and the Fraternal Order of Police have both expressed gratitude for the bravery and selflessness demonstrated by the troopers.
The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association provided the following statement thanking state troopers for their bravery:
"Please join the PSTA in praying for these brave troopers and their families. Each day, the men and women of the Pennsylvania State Police go to work prepared to give their last full measure. We can never thank them enough for their incredible bravery."
The Fraternal Order of Police also issued a statement expressing gratitude and support for the injured troopers:
"These Troopers showed the kind of bravery and selflessness that defines the Pennsylvania State Police. We’re grateful they’re receiving the care they need and pray for their full recovery. The PA FOP stands united in support of the injured Troopers, their families and all who serve with honor."
Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area around I-81 southbound at Exit 3 as the investigation continues.
