Faculty members at Penn State University are preparing to vote on whether to form a union, marking what could become the largest public sector single union election in Pennsylvania's history. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced on Monday (December 9) that faculty across all Penn State campuses, totaling about 6,000 members, will participate in the vote next year.
The SEIU aims to secure job and economic security, as well as a greater voice for faculty in workplace decisions. Steve Catanese, President of SEIU Local 668, emphasized the need for transparency and involvement in major decisions, such as campus closures and system-wide buyouts. He stated, "Those workers should have a voice."
In response, Penn State acknowledged the significant role of faculty in advancing the university's mission and stated they will review the petition upon receipt from the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board. The outcome of the vote could significantly impact faculty representation and influence at the university.
