The Winter wonderland that will be the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing will be artificial.
A shorter winter and less snow are the reason behind the call to create artificial snow. Obviously it’s needed for several events. A report co-authored by Georgia State University says the games will need about 49 million gallons of water, 130 fan-operated snow generators and 300 snow-making guns to create the 1.2 million cubic meters of fake snowflakes.
It could be tricky, because fake snow melts too. So it will be all luck if temps stay low enough. For the athletes, artificial snow comes with hazards. It’s much icier than the real stuff.
