Melatonin Use Is Rising

The use of melatonin by adults for sleep is on the rise.

A new study in the medical journal JAMA shows the amount of melatonin taken by Americans had more than doubled between 2008 and 2018. Experts worry the pandemic may have increased people's dependence on sleep aids such as melatonin, which may have harmful health effects. The problem is, since the supplement isn’t regulated, no one knows the long term effects says the NIH.

Melatonin can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea among other side effects. The other hiccup is that users are upping their dosages over time. While the recommended dose is 5 mg, it’s not being followed.

Here’s why it’s important to pay close attention to dosage recommendations and research the brand you buy: researchers discovered that the actual amount of melatonin in marketed supplements may be up to 478-percent higher than what’s advertised on the label. It’s also been discovered that some contain serotonin instead of melatonin.
