So, the polar vortex has arrived, and your house is starting to feel like the inside of a walk-in freezer. Before you start layering up like the kid from A Christmas Story, try these three hacks to keep the cold out and the warmth in.
1. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans
Yes, your ceiling fan can actually help keep you warm. Flip the switch on the side of the fan so it spins clockwise—this pushes warm air down instead of letting it escape to the ceiling, where it does absolutely nothing for you.
2. Bubble Wrap Your Windows
Drafty windows? Hit ‘em with some bubble wrap and a spray bottle of water. Press the wrap against the glass, and voilà—instant insulation that also lets you relive childhood stress relief by popping a few bubbles.
3. Open and Close Those Curtains Strategically
Let the sunshine in during the day to naturally heat your space, then shut the curtains tight at night to keep the warmth from escaping. If you don’t have thick curtains, you can DIY it by hanging up blankets—because at this point, your home décor is survival mode.
With these simple tricks, you can stay warm without cranking the heat and sobbing over your energy bill. Stay toasty out there!
